This piece was created for one of my second year Graphic Design classes at Ontario College of Art and Design. The project consisted of creating a magazine cover and two spreads to showcase an article of our choice. When I read this article, News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier, I knew I’d made my choice. The subject matter was very relatable for me, and the modular nature of the article prompted interesting layout options and illustrative entry points. In the first illustration I focused on the overwhelming bombarding nature of the media. In the second, the unhealthy addiction we have to news stories, and the need to always be plugged in to an unhealthy degree. In the last image I portrayed the news as a terrifying monster, to symbolize the panic and stress that overcomes people when they read unpleasant or tragic stories.
