This project was created for my second year Think Tank class at the Ontario College of Art and Design. The project involved intensive tracking of everything that was consumed, used or done (from blowing your nose, to flushing the toilet, eating a hamburger to checking a text) within a 24 hour period. This data was used as a starting point to choose some element of my consumption to track for a week long period. I chose paper because of its prevalence to several parts of my life, from my business selling cards and shipping small items, to presentation materials for class, packaging for various products and use around the house. Even with only a week to track usage, I generated almost 100 data points, each containing detailed information including but not limited paper type, usage, dimensions, specifications, time of use, place of use and disposal method. I thought a book was a fitting final representation of my consumption due to the use of paper in book creation. There were a lot of possible connections to explore in my data set, but I decided to focus on what types of paper I use and how they’re used. I was especially curious about how different the proportions of types of paper used were when looking at individual sheets compared to area. This exploration took place in the first two spreads of my book. The other connection I wanted to make was what was the paper actually being used for. This is indicated loosely throughout by using a consistent colour scale. I also created a third spread looking at the proportions of paper (by area) that was kept or discarded by various methods.
